What is a hammertoe?

The hammertoe deformity is characterized by an abnormal bending that usually affects one or more of the middle toes at the middle joint. While the tendency to develop toe deformities has a hereditary influence, this tendency can be exacerbated by wearing tight-fitting shoes like high heels that cause extreme pressure on the front of the foot.

When hammertoes are in the early stages, they are more flexible and will respond well to non-invasive treatments. More severely bent and rigid hammertoes will often require surgery to straighten them.

Below are non-invasive treatments for hammertoes IN THE EARLY STAGES:

  • Proper Footwear: Wearing supportive and comfortable shoes with a wider and deeper toe box will help prevent the tops of bending toes from rubbing. Lower heel cups can also help.

  • Orthotic inserts and braces: An orthotic insert can raise the base of the metatarsal bones, which will help correct the imbalance between the tendons and muscles that are contributing to the toe bending. Braces and toe separators can also be helpful.

  • Padding for Insulation: Moleskin pads for corns and calluses that often occur with toe deformities to reduce rubbing and prevent blisters.

  • Medication: Over-the-counter pain medications like ibuprofen or acetaminophen may be taken in moderation to reduce pain and swelling.

  • Corticosteroids: Steroid medications are injected around joints to decrease stiffness, inflammation, and pain.

  • Physical therapy toe exercises: Toe exercises are great for increasing strength and flexibility, which will help maintain a proper balance between tendons and muscles and decrease bending.
