4 Simple Tips for Treating Painful Foot Blisters
Due to the extra pressure and often moist environment inside your shoes, painful blisters are a common ailment that can affect your feet. Moisture and rubbing on the insides of your shoes irritate the skin causing redness, swelling, and the appearance of fluid under the skin as your body responds to the irritation. Orthotic inserts may be needed to treat and isolate potential blister-causing problems like bunions and hammertoes.
Treating hot spots and blisters early will help prevent popping and the introduction of microbes that can cause infection. If you often experience blisters on your feet, see our Valley Stream Podiatry foot doctor to determine the cause.
Use these 4 simple tips for treating painful blisters on your feet:
Carefully drain the fluid—Sterilize a small needle and carefully insert it through the skin at the edge of the blister and remove it. Push gently with a cotton ball or gauze pad and slowly drain the fluid through the hole. Try not to pop the protective skin that is covering the blister.
Disinfect—Carefully wipe the area with a disinfectant such as hydrogen peroxide and apply antibiotic ointment to kill any germs that could cause infection.
Protect the area—It’s important to cover the area with gauze or band-aid to keep dirt and infection out and to help protect the tender skin.
Check your footwear—Make sure your shoes have proper cushioning and support without rubbing. Identify any hot spots and insulate with moleskin padding. Choose shoes with a wider toe box to give your toes room to move without friction.
