Pregnancy & Your Feet

While pregnancy is a transformative, beautiful, and life changing event, one of the most common complaints of pregnant women often concerns the debilitating pain and discomfort that can strike their legs, feet, and ankles.

Causes of foot pain during pregnancy

Since your center of gravity will shift during pregnancy to make room for the growing baby, pressure will be added to the feet, particularly as you gain weight. A major cause of swelling in the feet is from the increase in blood volume, especially during the later stages of the pregnancy.

Hormonal changes are also occurring that can cause the ligaments to become more flexible which increases the pressure on the plantar fascia on the bottom of the foot causing swelling and pain as the arches begin flattening. Flattening of the feet causes them to roll inward in a condition called overpronation. This overpronation can cause problems with your walking mechanics that also can create pain and discomfort in your knees, hips, and back. Custom molded orthotic inserts can be made by your podiatrist to correct overpronation and eliminate these complications.

Treatment of pregnancy related foot and ankle pain and swelling

Steps you can take to minimize pain and discomfort include: icing and elevation of your feet; staying active and hydrated; eating a balanced diet; and avoiding tight fitting socks and shoes. In situations where long periods of sitting or driving are required, it is important to take frequent breaks to walk around and stretch your legs and feet.
