What is a Bunion?

A bunion is formed of swollen tissue or an enlargement of boney growth, usually located at the base joint of the toe that connects to the foot. The swelling occurs due to the bones in the big toe shifting inward, which impacts the other toes of the foot. This causes the area around the base of the big toe to become inflamed and painful.

Bears Tight End Nurses Broken Foot

Back in November in a game against the New York Giants, Chicago Bears tight end Zach Miller sustained a broken foot.  The 32 year old Miller has been plagued with injuries throughout his career.  He missed three seasons in a row from 2012 to 2014.  This time around, Miller is optimistic.  On Bears All-Access Miller said that the rehab for his broken foot is ”going great.”  “Everything’s going according to plan, ahead of schedule. I’ve been through this exact rehab schedule before. I know what it entails.”  He went on to say that he’ll be ready for the Bears training camp when it starts in April.

According to Elon’s men’s basketball coach Matt Matheny, freshman basketball guard Seth Fuller may be undergoing surgery for his broken toe. Fuller has been wearing a protective walking boot on his right foot for over a month, but despite this, he has made short appearances in two games. Coach Matheny shared, “We’re thinking red shirt. We’ll know soon. We’re trying to decide if he needs surgery or not, but it’s not getting better.” Originally, the team had thought it was something relatively minor, like turf toe. Unfortunately for Fuller and his team, he has numerous very small fractures in his big toe.

What to Know About a Broken Toe

Although most people try to avoid foot trauma such as banging, stubbing, or dropping heavy objects on their feet, the unfortunate fact is that it is a common occurrence. Given the fact that toes are positioned in front of the feet, they typically sustain the brunt of such trauma. When trauma occurs to a toe, the result can be a painful break (fracture).

Symptoms of a Broken Toe

  • Throbbing pain
  • Swelling
  • Bruising on the skin and toenail
  • The inability to move the toe
  • Toe appears crooked or disfigured
